Being physically active helps to maintain a healthy body weight which reduces your cancer risk.

Studies show being overweight, physically inactive, and not eating well increases your risk of developing cancer.

Being physically inactive contributes to 5 types of cancer including

  • Bowel Cancer

  • Breast cancer

  • Prostate

  • Uterine

  • Lung cancer

14% of colon cancers

11% of post-menopausal breast cancers

 

Get active

30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per day. This does not have to be continuous exercise.

30 minutes of vigorous activity every day to reduce your risk of developing cancer

60 minutes of moderate physical activity per can reduce your risk of developing cancer.

Moderate physical activity is defined as an activity in which you can hold a conversation. Examples include brisk walking

Vigorous physical activity includes any activity that makes you ‘huff and puff’. Examples includes fast swimming, cycling, or jogging.

 

How to get started

  • Get your friends and family to join you to help keep you motivated

  • Set goals and challenge yourself to build up your fitness levels

  • Drink water before during and after you exercise

  • Turn off the TV or computer and use this time to get active

  • Walk or cycle to the local shops

  • Do gardening or housework

  • Walk your children or grandchildren to school

  • Walk to work or park your car a block way and walk the rest of the way

  • Enjoy a walk at lunch time either by yourself or with colleagues

  • Take the stairs not the lift

Being active like healthy eating requires some thought and planning each day. It also needs to be kept p over up lifetime. Regular physical activity will give you extra energy, make you feel better and reduce your risk of developing cancer.
