Buruli ulcer

What is Buruli ulcer?

Buruli ulcer is a serious skin infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium ulcerans. It destroys skin and soft tissue and can lead to large ulcers if not treated early. The incubation period can be 4-6 months and is prevalent in our local area.

Early signs to watch for

  • A new sore often on your arms legs

  • slowly healing sore or ulcer

  • A painless lump, swelling or spot that may look like a mosquito bite

  • Can slowly break down into an open ulcer

How it spreads

While not fully understood, evidence suggests mosquitoes and possums play a role in spreading the bacteria in some areas of Victoria.

Why summer matters

Risk increases in summer due to more mosquitoes, outdoor activity and exposed skin.

Prevention tips

  • Use insect repellent

  • Wear long sleeves and pants

  • Cover cuts and scratches

  • See a doctor early if symptoms appear
