Buruli ulcer
What is Buruli ulcer?
Buruli ulcer is a serious skin infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium ulcerans. It destroys skin and soft tissue and can lead to large ulcers if not treated early. The incubation period can be 4-6 months and is prevalent in our local area.
Early signs to watch for
A new sore often on your arms legs
slowly healing sore or ulcer
A painless lump, swelling or spot that may look like a mosquito bite
Can slowly break down into an open ulcer
How it spreads
While not fully understood, evidence suggests mosquitoes and possums play a role in spreading the bacteria in some areas of Victoria.
Why summer matters
Risk increases in summer due to more mosquitoes, outdoor activity and exposed skin.
Prevention tips
Use insect repellent
Wear long sleeves and pants
Cover cuts and scratches
See a doctor early if symptoms appear
